Story behind the art
Shiva is revered by many names such as, Adiyogi – The Originator of Yoga and Nataraja – The cosmic dancer. Throughout history there have been many interpretations of Shiva by artists around the world, however, this particular portrayal shows Shiva performing the celestial dance in infinite rhythmic iterations that represents the creation of the universe. Accompanying him is his loyal companion ox- Nandi.
It is believed that Shiva as Adiyogi resides in the magnificent snowy mountains of the Himalayas. Shiva's dance 'Tandava' is recognized as the most exceptional manifestation of the divine rhythm, trance, vigor and cosmic balance and serendipity. Shiva’s cosmic dance- 'Tandava' embodies 'panchakrityas' - five crucial acts that Shiva performs: 'Srishti' - creation, 'Sthiti' - preservation, 'Samhara' - destruction, 'Tirobhava' - concealing, and 'Anugraha' - grace, and it is this celestial commotion that establishes the principal motif of Shiva's 'Tandava'. The iconic pose shown here marks the final still of the Cosmic Dance. Each of Shiva's hands either hold an object or are shown making a unambiguous gesture. The back right hand holds the drum, representing the aboriginal sound at the manifestation of the cosmos. The back left hand holds a Trident- denotes obliteration leading to formation. The front right hand is held in the gesture of reassurance. Snake is often symbolized as one’s venomous ego, but when controlled can be worn as an ornament which is why Shiva is portrayed wielding a Snake with his hands.
Each of the other hands’ notation and the entire vibe of the dance has birthed the famous Indian Classical Dance ‘Bharatanatyam’ which is practiced to this day in India, as a divine method of communicating and connecting with the Nataraja himself.
