Story behind the art
Shiva is revered by many names such as, Adiyogi – The Originator of Yoga and Nataraja – The cosmic dancer. Throughout history there have been many interpretations of Shiva by artists around the world, however, this particular portrayal shows Shiva performing the celestial dance in infinite rhythmic iterations that represents the creation of the universe, along with his eternal love Shakti which personifies the divine union of consciousness and energy. The entire universe is perceived as being created, penetrated and sustained by two fundamental forces, which are everlastingly in a perfect, imperishable union. These forces are called Shiva and Shakti.

Shakti here stands one with Shiva, exemplifying the inherent feature of the divine feminine participating in the act of creation of the cosmos. The flow of Shiva’s majestic hair shows him as the Lord of Wind or Vayu, who is the indefinable form of breath present in all living beings.

Shiva's four hands signify Shiva's multiple powers .The back right hand holds the drum, representing the aboriginal sound at the manifestation of the cosmos. The back left hand holds a flame- denotes obliteration leading to formation. The front right hand is held in the gesture of reassurance. The front left hand points to the raised leg in a gesture which signifies that Shiva's activities will bring salvation. The other foot shows Shiva trampling the demon of ignorance. Snake is often symbolized as one’s venomous ego, but when controlled can be worn as an ornament which is why Shiva is portrayed wearing Snakes around him.
